why you should begin today. (just fucking do it.)

back when i was Petty LaBelle, i used to give people the mean side eye when i would come to them, mascara running, tired as hell, straight dazed and confused, asking for direction - direction in life, direction for my next move career-wise, direction to my dreams. looking back on it, it doesn't make much sense, right? many times i've found myself in a space where i had countless ideas, a plethora passions, and yet, not enough sense of what to do with all the intangible material that was in front of me. my heart and mind were heavy with these dreams i wanted to accomplish. must we relive the instances that i would turn to friends, professors, and even family for advice about the things i wanted to accomplish, but would leave their presence even more flustered and confused about what exactly i was "supposed" to do? time and time again i would hear the same six words:

"so start."
 "begin."
 "just do it."

like...what the fuck does that mean?! when one is feeling like they're being weighed down with ambitions and goals, the last thing they want to hear is "just start"; especially when they have no IDEA how to! needless to say i was flustered and just about tired of tired ass responses. so many moments ensued where i felt like entirely giving up. (and sometimes i did.) of course, looking back, i was weighed down by this anxiety and stress because i didn't trust the process. i didn't believe in myself enough to just go out there and get it. however, through my journey of traveling to this distant utopia i have visualized, written down, and set goals for, i've picked up a few gems along the way. i understand now that overwhelming yourself with passion can sometimes obscure the logical sense in things. break this shit down like tetris. declutter your mind, create a visual post-card of the end goal, and pack light. but that's another story.

thankfully, after my interview with the beautiful Pauleanna Reid a lot of the lessons that have been put on a silver platter for me were confirmed. if you were to sit down with some of the dopest entrepreneurs, influencers, and thought-leaders of our time, they would probably tell you the same advice you were so reluctant to ignore from ya mama. just start, boo. do you think the karen civils, the 40oz Vans, the mark cubans, the gary vaynerchuks got to where they are today because they waited to begin? no. they are where they are today because they started. (drake voice. no? okay.)

i know, "just do it" can be an arbitrary statement. it can lead to a lot of confusion, especially when one's mind is too focused on the big picture. but, i want you to know that anything is possible. it just begins with you actually beginning. whether it's starting a business, writing a book, or getting your IG followers poppin', let's break this small, ambivalent phrase down in a motivational way. so you can just fucking do it.

1. believe in the baby steps.

baby steps are still steps. it's still a movement in the forward direction. so, go forward. take the process slowly. trust the small steps you are taking toward your goal- a mile a day, a page a day, a subscriber a day- and understand that this all leads to your dream. go slowly, go at a pace that is comfortable for you. understand the yoUniqueness of your path. pick flowers and tools for your soul along the way.

your path is your path for a reason. don’t compare yourself to others. stay in your lane.

2. count the small victories/ the small victories count.

s/o to Pauleanna Reid. stop being so hard on yourself! the little things, the little actions taken every day, matter. waking up is a small victory. getting out of bed and going to the gym is a small victory. hopping your ass in front of the computer and sending that email you probably did not want to ever send is a small victory. if you are able to check one thing off of your list to get towards your goal, it matters.

3. eliminate "try" and DO.

personally, i get caught up with the word "try" because it eventually turns into a watermarked excuse as to why i didn't do something. "well, i tried to wake up at 5:30 but..." okay? and? of course, we all have responsibilities. but i'm so tired of giving excuses to my own laziness and giving power to the lack of execution. i'm working on holding myself accountable for my actions and being thorough in everything i do. make a commitment. do it.

4. perfection ain't happenin' on day one, baby.

we fixate too much on perfection. (i'm a virgo, so both my hands are up surrendering. i'm GUILTY.) mistakes are bound to happen and boy, are they fucking beautiful. mistakes are evolution in real time. trial and error is a way for us to water these seeds we've been planting in our garden. retrospective eyes always see the cryptic prize. (risk is okay. you should try it.) don't try to be perfect. just try to be genuine and true to yourself. trust the glo up, trust the process, fail, and do again.

5. begin today.

inhale the universe deeply. begin today. know that the small efforts are the building blocks to a big dream. start with creating your website today. start by purchasing a domain name. hell, start by just signing the fuck up! just begin today. don't worry about the perfect plan just yet. begin today by consciously putting an effort into something that is working towards your bigger goal.
just fucking do it.
